EL CAMINO
AUGUST 26

BEATNICK - CHRIS CUTZ - FRESH ONE

One hit Mexi-kitsch kitchen deserves another. So were the thoughts of Mauricio Couturier, who in late 2009 gutted his sleek but dated Airport Lounge in Little Italy to open San Diegos second installment of El Camino Super Cocina.

The India Street location weighs in at three times the size of its big brother in South Park, but the two are basically twins as far as both the affordable street fare and tongue-in-cheek chic decor goes.

Upgrades include a full liquor license, a second bar that includes vintage editions of Donky Kong and Ms. Pac-Man, and a thin stage at the far end of the main dining room where, on Saturdays, Ikah Love spins vinyl atop a live house band. On Tuesdays 80s karaoke accompanies half-priced tacos and $3 Coronas. Latin jazz and soul, sometimes live, fill the air through the week. The week rounds out with $1 mimosas on Sundays.

El Camino is 21-and-up after 10 p.m.
